GLP-1 pills explained: Wegovy pill vs Foundayo

Last reviewed · By GLP1 Sidekick Editorial · 4 min read

The short answer

Two daily GLP-1 pills are FDA-approved for weight management: the Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide 25 mg, approved Dec. 22, 2025) and Foundayo (orforglipron, approved April 1, 2026). The Wegovy pill must be taken on an empty stomach with up to 4 ounces of water and a 30-minute wait, while Foundayo can be taken any time with or without food. Both start at $149 a month self-pay and are covered for eligible people by the $50 Medicare GLP-1 Bridge.

Which GLP-1 pills are approved for weight loss?

  • Wegovy pill (semaglutide tablets, Novo Nordisk) — FDA-approved Dec. 22, 2025 to reduce excess body weight and maintain weight reduction long term, and to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with established heart disease and obesity or overweight.
  • Foundayo (orforglipron, Eli Lilly) — FDA-approved April 1, 2026 for adults with obesity, or overweight with weight-related medical problems, alongside diet and activity. It’s a small-molecule (non-peptide) GLP-1.

Rybelsus, an older oral semaglutide, is approved for type 2 diabetes, not weight management.

Trial results come from different studies with different designs and populations, so they can’t be compared head-to-head.

Are GLP-1 pills as effective as injections?

In their labels, the Wegovy pill (25 mg) averaged 13.6% weight loss at 64 weeks and Foundayo’s highest dose about 12% among people who stayed on treatment, while the Wegovy 2.4 mg injection and Zepbound produced their own results in separate trials. None of the labels includes a head-to-head trial comparing the pills with each other or with the injections. Your prescriber can help weigh effectiveness, side effects, routine and cost.

Who might prefer a pill?

People who don’t want injections, who travel and want to avoid refrigerated pens, or who prefer a daily routine. The Wegovy pill’s empty-stomach rule suits some mornings and not others; Foundayo has no food or water restrictions. A pill is still a GLP-1, so expect the same kinds of side effects and the same need for protein, fluids and strength training.

What should I know about birth control and surgery?

Lilly says birth control pills may not work as well while taking Foundayo and that your provider may recommend another method for 30 days after starting and after each dose increase. Tell your care team you take any GLP-1 before surgery or sedation; the labels warn about the risk of food getting into the lungs during procedures.

Where can I get a GLP-1 pill?

Both require a prescription. Lilly sells Foundayo through LillyDirect (home delivery or retail pickup) and says it’s also available through U.S. retail pharmacies and telehealth providers. Novo Nordisk sells the Wegovy pill through NovoCare Pharmacy and local pharmacies with its savings offer. Telehealth services in our directory prescribe brand-name GLP-1s only—we don’t list compounded sellers.

Can I switch from an injection to a pill?

Possibly, but it’s a prescriber decision. Lilly’s Foundayo FAQ says to consult your doctor about the transition and dosing, and the label says Foundayo shouldn’t be used with other GLP-1 receptor agonist medicines. Don’t combine or switch GLP-1s on your own.

Is there a GLP-1 pill for weight loss?

Yes. The FDA approved the Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide 25 mg) on Dec. 22, 2025 and Lilly’s Foundayo (orforglipron) on April 1, 2026. Both are once-daily tablets for chronic weight management alongside diet and activity.

What is the difference between Foundayo and the Wegovy pill?

They contain different active ingredients. The Wegovy pill (semaglutide) must be taken on an empty stomach with up to 4 oz of water and a 30-minute wait before eating; Foundayo (orforglipron) can be taken any time with or without food. Both start at $149 a month self-pay.

How much do GLP-1 pills cost?

In October 2026, the Wegovy pill costs $149–$299 a month self-pay through NovoCare and Foundayo $149–$299 through LillyDirect. With commercial coverage, savings cards can bring either to as little as $25; eligible Medicare Part D enrollees pay $50.

Does Medicare cover Foundayo or the Wegovy pill?

Yes, for eligible people with Medicare Part D through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge (July 1, 2026–Dec. 31, 2027), with a $50 monthly copay. Eligibility depends on BMI and certain health conditions, and prior authorization is required.

Can I take the Wegovy pill with coffee?

The Wegovy label says to take the tablet on an empty stomach in the morning with up to 4 ounces of plain water only, then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else (including coffee) or taking other oral medicines. Foundayo has no food or drink restrictions.
